SAMAPASA, 1998 - 6.45 min loop, colour, stereo sound. Exhibitionformat SD.
A woman sings an Indian tone scale, sa-ma-pa-sa, and within the course of the tape her voice is made the object for a language deforming transformation. This succesively reduces her voice identity to noise. The video offer the audience an interesting physiological impact - the change from voice to noise will possibly give the spectator an audio after-image, just like a strong source of light would do after you have been staring into it. The work is a loop with a total running time of seven minutes. Another loop process is also simultaniously in progress due to her repetetive singing. The image of the strass ornamented singer with classic tight hair style and steady gaze is made with starting point in a promotional moviestar photography portrait of the well known German actress, Brigitte Helm, principally known for her role as Maria/The robot in Fritz Langs Metropolis from 1926.
